Today's the five year anniversary of Necrobarista's release. For those unfamiliar, a quick primer: Necrobarista is a 3D visual novel set in a cafe that sits on the boundary between the real world and the afterlife, acting as a place for the recently departed to stop for one last cup of coffee. My year has been pretty eventful so far. I'm still doing full-time work, my parttime degree, and the separate certification for data protection law on the side. I had two exams in March, three in May/June, and I'll have five more the next two months. I don't care about AI 'art'. I mean, I care about the huge ethical problems that come with it - but I do not, in the slightest, care about the actual work that gets produced. It might as well be noise to me. There's no point to any of it. The reason for that is pretty simple: To me at least, art is about communication. Sharing your thoughts and ideas with the world. Daily notes are useless. The value of a note is directly proportional to the number of times it is visited. That value is exponentiated each time a note is shared. Daily notes aren't revisited and they aren't shared. Daily notes look like this: notes/ yyyy-mm-dd.md yyyy-mm-dd.md yyyy-mm-dd.md On the surface, the idea of a note per day seems great. You plan out your day and track your work. You can revisit the past if needed. But you won't. All you are doing is generating digital clutter. You will also never share these notes, so the chance of their value increasing exponentially is zero. Instead you should focus on creating notes that you are likely to revisit or likely to share. Focus.md I have one note that I visit all the time when I am working. It's a single Markdown file that I constantly update. It's essentially a to-do list that just helps me juggle all the things that I need to track. I call it focus.md # Focus Tasks that I have to do ## Periphery Tasks that I have to be aware of, but I don't have to do. It's nice because it lets me offload information that I don't need at hand and helps me focus on what I need to do. Don't ask the same question twice I try to never ask the same question twice. That means that when I do have a question, that question and its answer get a note. They look something like this: # Issue ## Issue details ## Resolution Since I'm a programmer, I make a lot of these notes. I don't visit them very often, but I do revisit them if the same issue pops up again. But these notes find their value in being shared. If another person encounters the same issue, and I am able to help them fix it, then the note is worth the cost of its creation. I even add a lot of these notes to our documentation so I don't have to share them by hand. It took me a while to figure out what's worth recording, and what isn't. Here's an idea: Can we just have the facts of the news reported to us? In the olden days, when I was a teenager, the news appeared on the telly box thing in the early evening. They waffled on for 30 minutes with all that was happening. Job done. Next TV show. Now we have wall-to-wall 24-hour news channels. All they do is regurgitate the same stories over and over. However, worse than that, it's not just the facts.....it's their feckin' opinions, and that of experts they wheel in. The incessant speculation on why something happened; who might be to blame; what can we learn from it; what might happen next -- and we are drip fed a few facts as they get released. I stopped watching news on the TV, and consume it by reading online. Even this is now getting full-on monotony. At least I can read quickly and move on. I've never been known for my coordination, balance, or cardiovascular enthusiasm. In team sports, I was invariably the last one picked – probably only because "not picking" wasn't an option. Today my smartphone died. Not the Boox Palma fortunately, but an old Xiaomi Redmi 9 that I only used as a Whatsapp server. Wait, what do you mean? Let's step back. Whatsapp has been standalone for a few updates now, sure, but it still depends on an active installation on a smartphone. But isn't the Palma a smartphone? Today I had a 👀 This week someone has clearly used the wrong email address as I received a copy of a Doctors sick note excusing the guy from work for 90 days, and detailing the issue. The HR team have then replied to it acknowledging it, and then a further email enclosing forms to claim enhanced sick pay on their health insurance. I was going to ignore it, but I think I need to let them know. The odd thing is, it seems to be the guy himself who has it wrong. I've been really enjoying going to the zine library as often as they're open, and have scoured my way through most of their perzine collection, now I'm onto lit zines and art zines. After making several one off art zines, some bordering into a perzine-ish territory, I've decided I think I finally want to start a serial perzine! I'm currently developing a little art piece that I'll feature in my inaugural issue, but as it's dependent on something developing in real time, I'll need to wait to put that in last. I generally have a good job. My boss is great, most of my coworkers are good, I am good at the actual tasks, and I can set my own pace and priorities (within a limit). I read Tala's "You don't need a grand live to blog" a while ago, and it reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend: I suggested to them they should make a bearblog, but they told me their life simply wasn't interesting enough. I already wrote a long-ass article explaining why what is called "AI" by our technocrat overlords will never be intelligent, become sentient, or do a job as good as a human person born of flesh. This is a reminder that it cannot do a good job at translating too. It does not understand context, subtlety, turn of phrases, cultural reference, and so on. I have a new Music Playing Device coming to my house in a month or so, so I've been taking some time to organize my music collection and combine it with my husband's to create a Household Music Heap which is all correctly tagged, non-DRM MP3s. This is a lot of work! I've used Foobar for about six years now, so I've had plenty of experience editing MP3 tags and messing with genre and rating tags and so on. Doing this manually for the whole collection - so that it would all be sortable and filterable on the New Device - felt like a waste of time. The last two months have been a ride on a very slow moving roller coaster. Living with health challenges has taken an adjustment no one asked if I was ready to make. Thankfully, I'm a quick study and I'm finding out what my current capabilities allow me to do. I'm sleeping like a baby, meaning that I can't make it through the night and I need frequent naps. I'm usually fine as long as I am still. Moving around too much takes my breath away and man oh man, am I slow. One of my grandson uses a wheelchair most of the time but he can get out of it and beat me in a foot race right now. When I was a child, I loved my lego. I found great pleasure in constructing things and using my imagination. I had a huge box of random blocks, colours, and shapes. I would scatter them on the floor, or a table, and build amazing things -- well I thought so! Fast forward 40 years or so. I visited a friends house the other day and she showed me her son's Lego collection. An entire wall-to-wall bookshelf of models he had built. He clearly took pride in his work. However, it made me reflect on how things seem to have changed. In my childhood, I worked with a pile of random blocks. Whereas, he bought a kit of pieces, containing an instruction booklet, and built a model using all the blocks. Where is the imagination? The stimulation? The understanding on how blocks interconnect and the best use of material to bring your thoughts alive? Is that what Lego is now? A box of predetermined plastic pieces you connect and admire. I’ve been echoing the term “cocoon mode” so often to people around me, if they ask how I’m doing. It’s just- a transition stage. In short, I’m job searching (a little frustratingly) while keeping busy. I am doing 2-month Python course/workshop with local university down the street from me, helping my friend edit his poetry book before his writer’s retreat, learning some GIS concepts, figuring out a portfolio, volunteering in the library as a ESL tutor for adult learners, and playing Stardew Valley with a couple of friends. In recent months, Aura and I have spent a disgusting amount of time talking about Marathon (2025), following Bungie's shaky reveal stream and a subsequent (and extremely loaded) alpha test. I skipped two weeks of flashbackFriday because I couldn’t bring myself to publish the next post I had queued up. It takes me back to a time when things were unraveling between me and my best friend, ML. We were struggling with the new reality of going to different schools and not seeing each other every day. Before joining bearblog I used to not be the biggest fan of email. I mainly just used mine to sign up to stuff and get spammed with notifications& newsletters for things I don't care about. I didn't view it as a medium for communication, i viewed it as a nuisance. That changed once i started using bear and saw how many people on here used email as their primary form of communication. And once i started using it as well and cleaned up my inbox from all the spam i kept getting, i realized - I actually really love email. It's nice to be able to take things slower. When you get mail, you're not expected to reply immediately. You can take your time - it's not as fast-paced as other social media. When you give someone your Instagram, they might have to make an account and agree to the TOS so they can communicate with you.1 Same for every other social media. But email? Everyone already has an email. It makes things so much more frictionless. It's also not controlled by any one entity - it's an open standard. You don't have to worry about some corporation getting too greedy and making email suck really hard. With social media, you're at the whims of whoever is running the platform. Email doesn't try to maximize engagement. It knows it's a tool. You open your inbox, check if you've got mail and that's that. No intrusive notifications, no dark patterns. Just the stuff you actually need. Only problem is that most people's inbox gets cluttered up with all kinds of garbage from the twenty services they signed up to but forgot about, putting them off of email and just viewing it as a way to sign up for stuff. Buuut, that can be resolved fairly quickly if you just sit down for a bit and block all the adresses you don't wanna get mail from. So, yeah. Email is pretty cool.
